Since Jayden was about a year old, he started shoving every type of food in his mouth. Its great for us because there is more freedom with food unless, of course, it is a vegetable. He used to love them but suddenly there is a ban on healthy food since he knows there is sweet fruit available. His favorite food is pasta and lots of it and he loves to get it everywhere!
Jayden's pasta mess
Usually when we go out, we bring food for him since he isn’t eating a full kids size meal and it is cheaper and healthier. Recently on our trip to Chicago and when we’ve had family visiting, it hasn’t been easy or convenient to bring his food so we’ve decided to just get him something to eat at a restaurant. All I have to say is NO WONDER THERE IS CHILD OBESITY IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!! The menu items are ridiculous! I struggle each and every time with what to order. Hmmm… do I choose the grilled cheese on white bread filled with processed American cheese and slathered in butter with fries? or do I choose the deep fried trans-fat filled fish and chips or chicken fingers? or do I choose the ever healthy corn dog?
THIS HAS GOT TO CHANGE!
I realize kid’s meals probably aren’t a big money maker and they want something easy to just cook up but come on. There are healthy options on the adult menu so why not just cut it down for kids? Maybe the cost? Maybe parents don’t want to make their kids eat healthy in restaurants and it is easier to serve fries and a cheeseburger so there isn’t the demand? Trust me, when I am at a restaurant, that is what I want to order even though I know I should get something less artery blocking.
We are trying to teach Jayden about healthy foods and if he has a grilled cheese, it is 2 slices of wheat bread and cheddar cheese with no butter. Of course, we aren’t perfect and no one else is. However, it would be nice to see at least 1 or 2 healthy items LIKE FRUIT on a menu instead of lard.
The one restaurant that just irks me is Duke’s. We love to go there because they have great food and everything is pretty much natural and high quality. That is until you get to the kid’s menu – I was so infuriated that he claims to offer great food but there wasn’t even a fruit bowl or veggie assortment available for kids. It’s ok to feed our kids crap? I brought the menu home with me and was going to email Duke about it but never did… like almost everything I get frustrated with. Except graffiti. I report it in my neighborhood to help prevent future damage as it has been a problem. Tangent, sorry…
I feel that raising our kids is a team effort. What they learn in school, at home, on the playground, on TV and in public affects their life. We should provide them with healthy and smart avenues to make it easier to make the right choice. I’m not saying that restaurants offering healthy foods will change childhood obesity but it may change perception and alter what kids and parents choose off the menu. Any little bit can make a difference.
